20 Years of Orthodontic Experience

Dr. Burcu Bayirli

Burcu Bayirli is integral to our team at Riolo Orthodontics. She is an orthodontist trained at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

Dr Bayirli was born in Istanbul. She attended American Academy for Girls. Dr. Bayirli then attended Istanbul University, School of Dentistry and graduated in 1993. During the last years of dental school, she became very interested in Orthodontics and decided to pursue a MS degree in Orthodontics in the United States. Two weeks after her dental school graduation, she was in Ann Arbor starting the graduate program in orthodontics at the University of Michigan Dental School. After getting her MS degree in Orthodontics in 1996, Dr. Bayirli decided to pursue her interest in research and teaching so she decided to enroll in the PhD program in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. As she was finishing her PhD, she was offered a full time position teaching at University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry as an Assistant Professor in the department of Orthodontics.  Currently Dr. Bayirli hold a clinical associate professor appointment at the University of Washington, department of orthodontics. She directs the orthodontic education for the graduate pediatric dental clinic. She is responsible for teaching dentists studying to be pediatric dentists the fundamentals of early orthodontic treatment. Dr Bayirli is also the orthodontic clerkship director for the dental students at the University of Washington School of Dentistry.

In 2006, Dr Bayirli and Dr Riolo had their first child Mina; a few months after her birth, Dr Bayirli was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure. Their younger daughter, Banu, was born in 2007. Although Burcu loved her job and Ann Arbor where she had lived for 19 years, she missed the excitement of a larger city, since both Burcu and Chris wanted to raise their children in the Pacific Northwest they decided to move to Seattle in 2009.  Today when Dr Bayirli is not teaching at the University or treating patients here at her private practice she enjoys skiing and sailing and spending time with her family.

Dr. Chris Riolo

Dr. Christopher Riolo obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

He completed his orthodontic training and received his Speciality Certificate in Orthodontics and Masters of Science degree at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Dr. Riolo also has a PhD in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.  Dr Riolo currently  teaches in the orthodontic department at the University of Washington as an affiliate associate professor. His research interests include; early/interceptive treatment of children, custom orthodontic appliance systems and lingual braces (braces behind the teeth).

Dr Riolo believes that the knowledge necessary to create beautiful smiles is gained through a combination of education, practical experience, and dedication to lifelong learning. Dr Riolo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This signifies a unique achievement, a step beyond the three years of advanced education required for a dentist to become a specialist in orthodontics. Nationally, only one-third of the orthodontists in the United States are certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.  Dr. Riolo’s status as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics demonstrates his passion and commitment to excellence.  Dr Riolo participates in organized dentistry as a board member of both the Washington State Society of Orthodontists (WSSO) and the American Lingual Orthodontics Association.  He is also a member of the following organizations:

Dr. Riolo has been married to his wife, Burcu for 11 years. They have two girls Banu and Mina ages 11 and 12 respectively.  Dr Riolo has been a pilot since high school and in his spare time enjoys flying, sailing and skiing.

Dr Riolo hold a affiliate associate professor appointment at the University of Washington dental school and has taught in the early treatment segment at the University of Washington he currently teaches interdisciplinary orthodontics at the University of Washington and specializes in esthetic adult orthodontic treatment including lingual orthodontics (braces behind the teeth). Dr. Riolo lectures nationally on topics related to adult esthetic treatment using custom orthodontic appliances and 3D printing applications in orthodontics.
